Fathers Matter: A Whole-Family Mental Health Training, Pregnancy to Postpartum

This training breaks down what emotional distress can look like during pregnancy and the first year after birth for both fathers and mothers, helping participants recognize patterns that are often overlooked.

Attendees will practice how to check in with their partners, respond to tough moments without escalating stress, and take steps to care for their own mental health. The session also explores how everyday actions, like creating stability at home and staying connected to support systems, can make a lasting difference for both parents and babies.

The training includes interactive opportunities where fathers and mothers can join separate groups to share experiences and support. Participants will also explore how everyday actions, such as building routines at home and staying engaged with support networks, can have a meaningful impact on the well-being of both parents and babies.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize signs of depression, anxiety, and emotional distress in both fathers and mothers during pregnancy and the first year postpartum
  • Respond to emotional distress in partners and themselves with empathy, practical strategies, and confidence
  • Implement daily strategies to support family well-being, including routines, shared responsibilities, and stress management
  • Identify community, healthcare, and mental health resources and connect families to appropriate supports
  • Understand the impact of fathers’ mental health on the overall family system and take proactive steps to strengthen family resilience

Target Audience: New or expecting fathers and mothers.

Stipend Opportunity: Families who attend the full training will receive a $100 stipend in recognition of their time and commitment. Full attendance is required to be eligible for the stipend.

In lieu of providing a stipend, children are not permitted at the training. While we deeply value the role of children in families, this ensures that parents can fully focus on the training session.

A light breakfast and catered lunch will be provided.

Please note: All participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance upon completion of the training.

Must be a resident of Maryland to attend.
