Supporting Latino Families in the Perinatal Period
About the Session: This session will provide a practical and culturally grounded overview of how to effectively support Latino families during pregnancy and postpartum. Participants will explore how culture, language, migration experiences, family dynamics, and systemic barriers shape maternal health and mental health outcomes. Through real-life examples and community-informed insights, this “crash course” will help providers and support persons move beyond surface-level cultural awareness and into meaningful, respectful, and effective engagement with Latino communities.
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify key cultural values and beliefs that influence perinatal experiences in Latino communities
- Recognize common barriers Latino families face in accessing maternal and mental health care
- Apply culturally responsive communication strategies when supporting Latino clients and families
- Understand the role of trust, community, and lived experience in improving maternal mental health outcomes
