Class Description:

Join teaching artist Karen Webber for a 5-day online journey that emboldens the senior adult to reclaim her/his speaking voice in a supportive, playful environment while exploring values such as resilience, self-care, self-acceptance, holding space for another, and moving from fear to hope on a journey of self-discovery. Vocal warmups focus on breathing, tone, pitch, and resonance. Theatre Games lead to surprising discoveries, building community and confidence.

“Before the Parade Passes By” from Hello Dolly is a song about positivity and action. It asks us if we are living life to the fullest. Learners will explore and analyze lyrics of four resilience-themed songs from the musical theatre. Each song about resilience will provide a springboard for group discussion and writing personal responses. Learners will write 4 separate response pieces, one for each song, and then develop one (or incorporate pieces of all 4) into a final presentation.

Using collaborative process, learners will comment on each other’s work using a system developed by dancer Liz Lerman that allows us to warmly give and receive feedback. Final performances will occur via Zoom on 8/12 with family and friends cordially invited and the option to record for future viewing.
