Who We Are What We Do Understanding Mental Illness Aging Considerations Maintaining Mental Health Getting Help Get Involved

"The clinical presentation of older adults with mental disorders may be different from that of other adults, making detection of treatable illness more difficult."

Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health, 1999

Who We Are

As we age, certain physical changes, life experiences and changing circumstances influence our vulnerability to mental illness.

In later life , we should attend to mental health practices, needs and symptoms of problems. Older adults are considered a “special population” because there are unique considerations for how they should be assessed and treated.

The mental well being of an older adult is tied to multiple variables. The more people know about these variables and associated risk factors, the better they can attend to potential problems and mental health needs that might arise.

The list of considerations to the left represents common areas of concern and mental health impact.
